Türk Standartları’nda olduğu gibi Amerika’da yayınlanan kılavuz dökümanlar, yönetmelikler (specifications), kodlar (codes) da kimi zaman tavsiye niteliğinde kimi zaman ise uygulaması zorunlu dökümanlardır. İlgili kurumlar tarafından hazırlanan yönetmelikler, genellikle model codes olarak ifade edilen dökümanlar içerisine entegre edildikten sonra ilgili eyaletin meclisinde kanun haline gelmesi itibariyle uygulamaya girmiş olur. “Building Codes” ifadesi bir yasa olarak düşünülmelidir. Model kodların içerisine dahil edilmesi planlanan yönetmeliklerde sıklıkla ANSI sertifikalandırması istenir, örneğin ASCE 7 şartnamesi de uzun süredir ANSI ASCE 7 olarak çıkmaktadır, bu geçişin nedeni ASCE nin kurum olarak ANSI tarafından sertifikalandırılmasıdır.

IBC tüm binalar için kapsayıcı bir kod iken IRC çok daha küçük ölçekli konutlar için özel bir yönetmeliktir. (one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses)

IBC karşılaşılan her türlü problemde aslında ilk bakılması gereken yönetmeliklerin başında gelir. ASCE de bulunan yükler, ACI da bulunan tasarım esasları da bu yönetmelik içinde tekrarlanır ya da referans verilir.

Steel Construction Manual içerisinde bulunan Design Examples isimli döküman her ne kadar metrik birimler de olmasa da mühendisler için çok önemli bir kaynaktır.
